How to Fix a Dead Car Battery

1. Diagnose the Problem

First, you need to establish whether you have a dead battery on your hands or another possible issue, like with your alternator. Thankfully, it’s a relatively easy diagnosis. Check for the following signs:

• The engine won’t start, but other systems will, like the radio or headlights
• The engine starts but dies immediately
• There’s a clicking sound when you turn the key in the ignition
• Dashboard lights are dim or not working

2. Try to Jumpstart It Yourself

4. Locate the battery terminals and remove any corrosion with a wire brush.
5. Connect the clamps to the corresponding terminals of each battery (red for positive terminals, black for negative ones).
6. Start the engine of the booster car.
7. Start the engine of the car with the dead battery.
8. Disconnect the cables.
9. Drive the car with the restarted battery for at least 20 minutes so the alternator can effectively charge it.

While a jumpstart is a great “quick fix” when dealing with a dead battery, it’s not a permanent solution. 3. Call in an Expert
