A deductible for an extended car warranty or vehicle service contract (VSC) is the amount you may be responsible for paying toward an eligible covered repair, as specified in your contract. With Endurance, deductible options for most plans range from $0 to $200, depending on the coverage and options selected.
The deductible is an important part of your potential out-of-pocket cost when an eligible covered repair occurs. Understanding how it works can help you compare coverage options and anticipate your potential out-of-pocket responsibility for covered repairs.
The word “deductible” often carries a lot of baggage from a person’s time dealing with auto insurance or health insurance, so it’s important to clarify the difference. With traditional policies like homeowners insurance, you may pay $500 to $2,000 (with $1,000 being the most common amount) before coverage even begins on an insurance claim.
With an extended warranty or vehicle service contract, the deductible is the premium amount specified in your contract that you’re responsible for paying toward an eligible covered repair. How and when the deductible applies depends on the terms of the specific contract.
Depending on the contract, the deductible may apply per repair visit, per covered component, or under another structure defined in the agreement.
Not all deductibles carry the same structure. A per-visit deductible means you pay one flat fee regardless of how many covered components are repaired in a single repair shop visit.
A per-component deductible, on the other hand, means you pay separately for each covered part replaced. For example, separate covered repairs to an alternator and a wheel bearing during the same visit could each be subject to a deductible, depending on the contract terms.
A per-visit deductible can be advantageous when multiple eligible covered repairs are completed during the same repair visit because only one deductible may apply, depending on the contract. When comparing plans, review both the deductible amount and how frequently it can be charged.
The deductible is one factor that may affect the cost of a vehicle service contract. Depending on the available options, choosing a lower deductible may result in a higher contract price or payment, while a higher deductible may reduce the contract cost. Pricing varies based on the vehicle, coverage, deductible, and other factors.
The right choice of deductible amount will depend on whether you want to minimize your monthly outlay or minimize your per-visit cost when something breaks. Some owners prefer to pay a bit more each month to reduce their potential liability, whereas others prefer the opposite.
For example, suppose an eligible covered transmission repair results in $2,500 of approved repair costs. Under a contract with a $200 deductible, the customer would generally be responsible for the deductible, while the provider would pay the approved covered amount under the contract terms. Any non-covered services or parts would remain the customer’s responsibility.
A lower deductible may appeal to drivers who prioritize reducing their potential out-of-pocket responsibility when an eligible covered repair occurs. However, the appropriate option depends on the difference in contract cost, the deductible structure, the coverage selected, and the driver’s budget.
A higher deductible may appeal to drivers who are comfortable assuming more out-of-pocket responsibility for an eligible covered repair in exchange for any applicable reduction in contract cost. Before choosing one, compare the available deductible options and review the contract’s coverage, exclusions, and limits.
When partnering with Endurance, in the event a covered repair is needed, the process is simple. When an eligible repair is needed, take your vehicle to a licensed repair facility and have the shop contact Endurance to file a claim before repairs begin. The repair facility will work with Endurance to determine coverage eligibility and obtain any required authorization under your contract.
Once an authorized repair is completed, Endurance pays the repair facility directly for approved covered parts, labor, and tax. You are responsible for your applicable deductible and any non-covered amounts under the contract.
Coverage details and eligible repairs vary by contract, so review your specific agreement or access it through the Endurance Customer Portal to understand the coverage, exclusions, deductible, and claim requirements that apply to your vehicle.
Your deductible is an important contract term because it helps determine your out-of-pocket responsibility when an eligible covered repair occurs. When comparing options, consider the deductible alongside the contract price, covered components, exclusions, limits, and other terms. Consider your vehicle’s age, mileage, reliability history, and how much you want to pay monthly to determine the right amount for your budget.
