GMC reliability fluctuates by model and year. Most recently, the company’s bread-and-butter pickup truck, the GMC Sierra 1500, and its full-size SUVs, the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, have been involved in troubles with the 6.2-liter V8 gas engine (not the Duramax turbo-diesel engine). While GMC and Chevrolet share many vehicle designs and components, these GM divisions don’t have similar average annual maintenance costs. The typical GMC vehicle costs $774 to keep on the road, while the average Chevy incurs $649 in similar expenses. The difference may be that the GMC lineup lacks passenger cars, like Chevrolet, which are usually less expensive to maintain. For instance, Ford (with a truck- and SUV-heavy model range) has an average yearly maintenance cost of $775, virtually identical to GMC.*
