  4. Are there any bulletins or recalls? Check on the NHTSA website for both. A Technical Service Bulletin could indicate a known software fix, whereas a recall indicates a safety related defect and manufacturers typically perform recall repairs at no charge to affected owners.
  5. Document the pattern. Dates, mileage on the odometer, any photos, and a description of what was happening can help the shop diagnose an issue and give you the assistance necessary to submit a coverage claim.
