A wave of new electric vehicles (EVs) is on the way, from Ford’s all-electric T3 truck to the family-ready Hyundai Ioniq 9 and the next-gen Tesla Model Y. As EV tech evolves, so do the repair costs, especially once the factory warranty ends. Batteries alone can cost thousands to replace.
That’s why an extended warranty coverage still matters. With protection in place, you can stay ahead of unexpected breakdowns and rising repair bills while enjoying the benefits of the latest EVs. Explore more about the top future EVs to watch and how to protect them for the long haul.
In the next few years, there are some electric vehicles that are set to come out and take the EV market even further. Some of these cars already have massive amounts of hype and will be highly sought-after for their innovations and technological advancements. Knowing what upcoming EVs are worth watching out for will help you decide if one of them is right for you.
While Ford already has an electric pickup on the market in the form of the F-150 Lightning, it is simply an adaptation of an existing all-gas truck. The T3 Electric Truck, though, is the first pickup that is built entirely on its own platform, which means better efficiency, longer ranges, and more power. This truck is set to arrive in 2027 and will be produced in Tennessee at Ford’s BlueOval City plant.
Hyundai’s Ioniq series is incredibly popular due to its unique styling and long electric range. While the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 are already in production, the Ioniq 9 is set to be a larger, three-row electric crossover that can seat seven and has plenty of room for all your cargo. With an expected release at the end of 2025, it is a great option for anyone who wants a family hauler but doesn’t want to spend a fortune on gas.
The Jeep Wrangler is an iconic vehicle for anyone who loves off-roading, but in 2028, Jeep is set to release an all-electric version of this popular SUV. Jeep plans to release a hybrid version first, but an electric model will be developed on the STLA platform. With regenerative braking and the high torque of an electric motor, it is a perfect option for anyone who loves the great outdoors.
The Tesla Model Y is a favorite of those who already love what the company is doing and a new generation is scheduled to be released for the 2026 model year. The exterior design has been revised for a sleeker look and the interior materials are also set to be upgraded. This means that drivers can expect a more high-end experience from one of the most popular EVs currently on the road.
One of the downsides of owning an electric vehicle is that it can be quite a bit more expensive to repair when an issue comes up. The battery pack, for example, is one of the most costly things to replace on an electric vehicle with a price ranging anywhere from $7,000 to $30,000. Other repairs for things like the electrical system and the charging system can also require a lot of cash.
In general, electric vehicles cost 30% more to repair than a standard gas vehicle. Plus, you still need to worry about all the other mechanical issues that an EV could have, just like a gas vehicle, such as suspension problems, tire replacements, brake upkeep, and other regular maintenance. That is why it is so important to be prepared for any potential issues by having an extended warranty in place.
Just like a traditional gas vehicle, an electric vehicle will come with a factory warranty that is provided by the manufacturer when it is new. Typically, these warranties have a few different components. The comprehensive limited warranty will generally last somewhere between three and five years, depending on the manufacturer, and will cover a wide range of systems and parts.
A powertrain warranty is also usually included and will last between five and six years. This covers the major mechanical components like the electric motor. The longest warranty is usually the battery warranty. This warranty covers the battery pack, and federal law requires it to last for at least eight years or 100,000 miles. Once these warranties are up, though, you will be financially responsible for any repairs that have to happen on the vehicle.
When your electric vehicle’s factory warranty expires, you are on the hook for any repairs that have to happen. The unfortunate thing about that is that the older a vehicle is, the more likely it is to develop issues, and if you are not covered, you could end up with serious repair bills on your hands. If, for example, your EV battery warranty has already expired when the battery wears out, you may end up having to pay thousands of dollars to get your vehicle back on the road.
If you want to be sure that your bank account is protected after your electric vehicle’s warranty is up, an extended warranty is your best option. An extended warranty, which is more accurately called a vehicle service contract (VSC), can be purchased from a third-party provider and will help you pay for repairs. This is especially helpful with EVs since their repair costs can be so high.
Knowing that you won’t have to pay thousands of dollars to replace a battery or repair a drivetrain issue can give you the peace of mind you need. With a protection plan in place, you can rest easy knowing that you won’t be stuck with massive bills if an issue comes up later down the road.
