Ford Motor Company has recently been featured in automaker news for its announced recall of over 330,000 vehicles due to a couple of serious safety defects. Potential issues with the rearview camera, door locks, and interior trim panels have been leading to problems that can increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash or simply create hazardous conditions while driving. Those who own a Mustang Mach-E electric SUV or the Lincoln Aviator luxury SUV, in particular, should take heed, as these are the primary models affected, but the list is extensive. Learn more details about the recall and everything you need to know to keep your vehicle, as well as yourself, safe on the road.

What’s Behind the Latest Ford Recalls?

Ford’s latest recall has three distinct, yet equally concerning, safety issues to be aware of. The first problem pertains to many different Ford models and is centered around the rearview camera. There have been numerous reports of the rearview camera image freezing, glitching, or not displaying when the vehicle is put into reverse. Naturally, this can create safety issues when backing up and needs to be solved with a software update. This specific recall was officially announced in early May and affects the widest range of Ford models.

The second issue that has caused a recall pertains specifically to many Mustang Mach-E models. The right-door latch on the front side reportedly malfunctions, causing the door to open while driving under certain conditions, such as when exposed to extreme heat or vibrations. This poses a serious safety risk for drivers and an increased risk of a crash.

Also, a detaching interior trim panel along the A-pillar of the Lincoln Aviator, the vertical structure between the windshield and front door, is the last issue reported. In a collision, loose trim components can easily become projectiles on the road which can injure occupants. Ford has addressed the defects rapidly and issued recalls for the affected model years that they know about.

In July 2025, Ford issued yet another major recall, this time impacting over 870,000 F-150 trucks from model years 2021 through 2023. The issue involves an electric parking brake that may activate unexpectedly due to wiring chafing in the rear axle, potentially leading to a sudden loss of vehicle control. This recall underscores the ongoing safety concerns affecting even Ford’s best-selling models and highlights the importance of checking your VIN regularly for new alerts.

Which Ford and Lincoln Models Are Affected?

The primary vehicle models affected by the earlier recalls are the 2020-2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E and Lincoln Aviator. For the backup camera issue, additional models across sporadic vehicle years, including the Ford Bronco, F-series (like Ford F-150), Transit, Edge, Expedition, Escape, Ranger, and Corsair, have also been reported. To see if your specific vehicle for these other Ford and Lincoln models is impacted, you should visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall site directly and input your vehicle identification number (VIN) to check.

What Drivers Need to Know About Recall Repairs

If you have never owned a vehicle that was recalled for repairs before, not knowing what to expect is normal. Luckily, you can rest assured knowing that the process is simple, and you can schedule your free repair for the affected part quickly. To add a little color to what the recall process looks like, the following four steps typically cover a standard recall:

  • Notification: Ford is required to notify all affected vehicle owners via both mail and email, with notifications typically including a description of the defect, its potential risks, the remedy being offered, and how to schedule service
  • No-Cost Repairs: All repairs under safety recalls are performed at no cost to the vehicle owner, regardless of warranty status, so whether the vehicle is under factory warranty or not, the manufacturer will cover all labor and parts necessary to fix the safety defect
  • Scheduling: Owners can take their vehicles to any authorized Ford or Lincoln dealership and, depending on the availability of parts and service capacity, repairs can usually be completed within a few hours
  • Loaner Vehicles: In some cases, if the repair requires your car to be kept overnight or longer, dealerships may offer you a loaner vehicle at no charge

While taking your vehicle in for a recall may be a headache of an issue, it’s important to act on all recall notices as soon as possible. This isn’t just for your own safety, but also to avoid any potential liability if an accident occurs due to a known defect that you put off fixing.

When Recalls Don’t Cover Everything

Although the automotive service and part costs will be covered when addressing specific manufacturing defects during a recall, they don’t necessarily cover all related repairs. Things can get tricky if a dealership inspects your vehicle and finds additional damage or wear and tear that is unrelated to the recall but within the same area. For example, if the dealership goes in to fix your door latch but notices that a faulty power door lock actuator needs a separate repair due to an unrelated defect, they will bring it up to you when you go to pick up your vehicle.

In this situation, since the issue isn’t a part of the recall, getting it fixed means you will be forced to pay out of pocket. The last thing you want to do in this situation too is put off getting the issue fixed in hopes that it becomes a part of a larger recall as there is no guarantee. For a vehicle that doesn’t have any warranty attached to it, investing in an extended warranty, often called a vehicle service contract, can help.

How an Extended Warranty Can Help Fill the Gaps

A vehicle service contract can be an invaluable resource for you on the road, especially if your vehicle is aging and falls outside factory warranty limits. At Endurance, there are a myriad of protection plans you can consider for your vehicle, each of which can be customized to suit your specific needs. For example, if you are simply concerned about only the most important parts under your hood that often come with the most expensive repair price tags, the Secure Plus plan is an excellent choice as it offers high-level stated coverage.

On the other hand, if you are seeking protection that is most similar to that which is offered by the manufacturer’s warranty that came with your car, the Supreme plan is an excellent choice. Offering coverage for nearly every major part including smaller parts like seals or gaskets, and not to mention the high-tech options, you can rest easy knowing you’re covered on the road.

In addition to this protection, you can enjoy standard customer perks like 24/7 roadside assistance, trip interruption coverage, and rental car reimbursement. Also add a year of Elite Benefits with any Endurance plan, for a small activation fee, which provides bonus perks like tire coverage, windshield repair, up to $500 in collision coverage, and more.
