When shopping for a vehicle service contract or extended car warranty, one of the most important decisions you’ll make is choosing between powertrain coverage and exclusionary coverage. Powertrain plans cover the components that generate and transmit power—the engine, transmission, driveshaft, and axles. Exclusionary plans cover nearly everything except a defined list of excluded items, making them the most comprehensive protection available.
The difference matters more than most drivers realize until they’re facing a repair bill for something their plan doesn’t cover. Here’s a straightforward breakdown of what each tier includes, what it leaves out, and who each option makes the most financial sense for.
All car owners who care about (1) keeping their vehicle in good condition, (2) avoiding expensive repair bills, and (3) staying safe on the road should really understand the basics about extended warranties. That includes what different kinds of extended warranties exist, what they cover, and what they don’t.
Below, we’ll focus on the difference between powertrain coverage and exclusionary coverage. But first, the basics.
Every new car comes with a factory warranty (also called a manufacturer warranty)–it’s the manufacturer’s promise to repair or replace components that fail due to mechanical breakdown, usually within the first 3 years or 36,000 miles (whichever comes first).
After the factory warranty expires, though, you have three choices:
This isn’t generally a problem if you can stick to the recommended maintenance schedule and put aside some savings to cover routine maintenance and unexpected repair costs, such as tire changes, new rotors, brake pad replacements, oil changes, and brake fluid changes. In fact, for many people, it’s all good until something major fails that requires an expensive repair. That’s when you start wishing you’d taken out some level of coverage for the financial peace of mind it provides.
Many manufacturers will offer an extended powertrain warranty or exclusionary warranty as long as you commit before your factory warranty expires and you have stuck to the recommended maintenance schedule.
A third-party warranty or vehicle service contract is another solution. Dedicated coverage providers try to compete for your business by offering a range of coverage options, deductible choices, and customer service experiences.
All extended warranties or vehicle service contracts fall into two categories:
Of course, in both cases, coverage providers also specify certain conditions that must be met for the coverage to be valid, which are outlined in the contract’s terms.
Before taking out an extended warranty coverage plan, you should check to see if the vehicle is already under warranty.
To check if it’s still covered by the factory warranty, you can call a local dealership with your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
To check if an extended warranty or vehicle protection plan is still in place, your best bet is to check the paperwork if you have it or call the provider. If it’s an Endurance auto protection plan, you can log in to the Customer Portal any time to check the plan’s status.
Powertrain warranties are the most common form of inclusionary coverage plans. A powertrain warranty covers the vehicle’s powertrain, which is the network of parts that generate the power, deliver it to the wheels, and get it moving:
These coverage plans only cover the powertrain, though. Even the best powertrain warranty may not cover components such as:
The name “exclusionary” can make it sound like you’re not getting much protection at all, but it generally offers the broadest component coverage, similar to a bumper-to-bumper warranty.
An exclusionary warranty covers eligible systems and components unless specifically excluded by the contract. As the most comprehensive coverage plans available, they’re also more expensive. Remember, though, it’s always worth checking the fine print of the contract and making sure there aren’t more exclusions than you expect. If there are components on the list of exclusions that you’d like to get covered, you can always contact your provider to see what your options are.
The excluded components vary from plan to plan, but common ones are:
And, as with any extended warranty, there are certain things that won’t be covered, including:
It’s important to follow the claims authorization process outlined in your contract. Having your repairs started without your provider’s approval may affect your claim eligibility. For example, Endurance contracts generally require repairs to be performed at a licensed repair facility, and covered repairs must be approved before the work starts.
To help you choose the right balance between cost and coverage, at Endurance, we structure our coverage plans in tiers. The table below shows some of the most important components covered by each.

To figure out which coverage tier makes most sense for you, consider the following three factors:
Exclusionary coverage is often a good fit for older and higher-mileage vehicles. These vehicles may be more likely to experience failures beyond the powertrain. If you’re not in a financial position to risk bigger repairs, you may wish to play it safe and go with exclusionary coverage.
If you’re unsure about which level of coverage to go for, we’d recommend asking yourself the following questions:
Older vehicles are more likely to experience problems beyond the powertrain warranty as they accumulate miles, so you may want a broader level of coverage to protect against costly repair bills.
Paying for a more comprehensive plan may not make as much sense if you’re only planning on keeping the car for a year or two. But if your car is a keeper, you’ll probably want broader coverage for unexpected repair costs.
Unexpected repairs costing several thousand dollars can occur, depending on the vehicle and the failed component. If you can comfortably absorb this kind of cost, a lower level of coverage may suit your needs. If you’d prefer not to run the risk of having to pay for these kinds of repairs yourself, a higher level of coverage will suit you better.
