Being able to cruise down the highway on a scorching summer day with a cool breeze coming from the vents inside your car is a true comfort and luxury. But have you ever stopped and actually wondered how it is that you’re getting such cool air?
Below, we will dive into the fascinating world of car A/C systems, thus empowering you with the knowledge you need to maintain optimal cooling and potentially save money on repairs. Everything from the system’s core functionalities, essential components, and even tips for ensuring peak performance will be covered to keep you comfortable on the road.
At its core, a car’s air conditioning system operates on the fundamental principles of thermodynamics. It uses a refrigerant, a specially formulated liquid that undergoes a phase change to absorb heat from the car’s interior and release it outside the vehicle (as well as vice versa). A variety of parts work within this system to provide you with the clean and refreshing air that hits your skin.
Diving a little deeper into the specifics, there are five primary components that are integral to the functions of your A/C system:
First and foremost, the compressor is the heart of an automotive air conditioning system. It is a pump powered by your vehicle’s drive belt, drawing in low-pressure refrigerant gas from the evaporator and, as the name implies, compressing it significantly. The point of this process is to dramatically increase the refrigerant’s temperature and pressure before it moves through the rest of the system.
Following the compression of the refrigerant in the system, the condenser plays a vital role in reducing hot air. As the high-pressure, hot refrigerant gas from the compressor moves through the condenser’s intricate network of coils, the airflow generated by the vehicles’ movement dissipates some heat. When this heat dissipation occurs, the refrigerant converts back into a high-pressure liquid.
Essentially serving as a glorified metering device, the expansion valve regulates the flow of the high-pressure refrigerant into the evaporator (which is the next stage of the process). As the refrigerant starts to expand and goes through the valve, it undergoes a significant pressure change. This sudden and dramatic pressure reduction causes the refrigerant to vaporize and absorb a substantial amount of heat rapidly. This causes the refrigerant to become notably cooler.
Tucked into the dashboard of your vehicle, the evaporator is another crucial component in the overall cooling process. As the chilled refrigerant from the expansion valve reaches the evaporator core, a blower fan continuously draws warm cabin air over the evaporator’s fins. When the cooled refrigerant starts to interact with warm cabin air, the heat is absorbed, and the air temperature plummets. This cool air is then directed into the passenger cabin, thus blanketing you in cool air on your drive.
As a bonus, the term refrigerant has been mentioned quite a bit in the above, but it’s worth covering what exactly this part of the car air conditioner system is. Refrigerant is the lifeblood of the air conditioning system. It is a specially formulated liquid, usually a type R-134 refrigerant, that is designed to transition between gas and liquid states. As it does so, heat is absorbed and transferred.
Now that you’re familiar with all of the key components of the air conditioning system in your vehicle and their purpose, it’s important to look at what actually happens when you turn the system on. The minute you click your A/C system into place, the compressor will spring into action. The low-pressure refrigerant gas will be drawn from the evaporator and compressed dramatically, raising both the pressure and temperature.
This refrigerant will then journey to the condenser, where the airflow from the vehicle’s movement, courtesy of the cooling fan, plays a vital role. The heat is dissipated once it passes over the condenser fans, transforming it back into a high-pressure liquid. This then passes through the expansion valve, where the pressure reduction cools it into a low-pressure and chilled gas. Finally, this chilled gas reaches the evaporator, where it is cooled further and directed into the passenger cabin. From this point, the cycle continues to ensure you keep receiving cold air against your skin.
Given the importance of the air conditioning system, it’s important to look at some essential air conditioning system maintenance tips. The following are some of the most crucial to consider:
Car repairs can be quite expensive, especially if they are associated with repairing major components, such as the air conditioning system, and specific parts, such as the compressor, radiator, or condenser. An extended warranty can provide you with protection against these unforeseen costs. Third-party warranties essentially act as a safeguard against mechanical breakdowns in your vehicle. Assuming the breakdown is covered under your specific warranty plan, some, if not all, of the cost will be covered by the plan through the claim process.
Depending on your warranty plan, individual parts or an entire system may be covered. It’s important to read the coverage terms and conditions of your contract prior to signing the agreement so that you can rest easier while driving.
The air conditioning system is an intricate grouping of parts and components, meaning the average person likely can’t handle major repairs on their own. If you notice any of the following signs, consider taking your vehicle to be diagnosed for A/C issues right away:
A well-maintained A/C system not only keeps you cool and comfortable during hot weather but also helps defrost windows during cold mornings and improve overall cabin air quality. Therefore, it’s not just for comfort but also for safety on the road, which is why ensuring your A/C system is up to date is crucial.
The best way to stay safe and have peace of mind on the road is to invest in an extended car warranty, also known as a vehicle service contract, that offers protection for your car’s A/C system. Endurance auto protection plans provide financial coverage for repairs affecting parts ranging from the total A/C system, cooling system, electrical system, and so much more.
Each Endurance vehicle contract comes with standard driving perks, including 24/7 roadside assistance (with towing, fuel delivery, and lockout services), rental car coverage, and trip interruption reimbursement. You can also choose to activate our exclusive Elite Benefits package, which offers up to $1,000 in total loss protection, reimbursements for up to four tires per year due to road hazards, key fob replacement, and more.*
Consider investing in an extended warranty to ensure your vehicle’s air conditioning system and other vital systems stay working properly. Call an Endurance plan advisor at (800) 253-8203 to request a FREE quote, or shop online to see your price now.
